You’ve finally figured out your personal and professional goals. You’ve probably even committed them to paper. Now is the time to measure them against the criteria below to make sure they are S.M.A.R.T. goals. This will not only help you to maximize your time and sharpen your focus, it will give you a clearer vision of where you are now and what it will take to get you where you want to go.
As Peter Drucker, the management theorist and author of 39 books said, “What gets measured, gets managed.”
In order to succeed, measure your goals against the criteria below:
S – Specific (What do you want to do or accomplish? Write it down and be specific).
M – Measurable (If you can’t measure it, you can’t manage it).
A – Achievable, attainable, action-oriented (Identify the goals that are most important to you and not so far out of reach that you won’t commit to them).
R – Realistic, relevant, reasonable (The goal needs to be realistic and the skills needed to achieve the goal are available).
T – Time-bound, trackable (Set a time frame for the goal. For a large goal, set incremental time frames as you progress towards your goal).
